Eight typing test mistakes that quietly cost candidates points

Most failed typing tests are not caused by a lack of speed. They come from small, avoidable habits.

The common ones

  1. Starting too fast. A hot start leads to early mistakes and a broken rhythm.
  2. Looking at the keys. It slows you and makes you lose your place in the text.
  3. Skipping or repeating a line. Use your eyes or a finger on the screen to track your place.
  4. Double spaces. They can count as mistakes in strict tests.
  5. Ignoring punctuation. Missing commas, brackets or full stops lose marks.
  6. Wrong capitals. Honourable Court and Section 439 need capitals.
  7. Correcting too much. Going back to fix old errors costs more time than it saves.
  8. Not reading the instructions. Rules for backspace, accuracy and time differ between tests.

How to avoid them

Practise under exam conditions, with the same duration and rules. After each test, find which of these happened and fix one habit at a time. Keep a list of your mistake words and drill them.

A last-minute reminder

In the first minute, type slower than you want to. Speed builds naturally once your hands settle, and a calm start usually gives a better final score.

Starting too fast and ignoring punctuation are among the most common, but your own pattern matters most.

In some tests they do. Type single spaces to be safe.

How do I track my place in the text?

Keep your eyes on the source line you are typing and read a few words ahead.
