What is a good typing speed for government jobs?
People often ask whether 30 or 40 WPM is a good typing speed. The honest answer depends on the job. The useful way to judge your speed is to compare it with what real adverts ask for.
What real adverts ask for
In the public adverts we have checked, clerical typing requirements run from 25 to 40 words per minute: 25 WPM in a Delhi High Court test, 30 WPM for Junior Clerk posts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and for ECP Sub Assistant, 35 WPM for SSC LDC and JSA, and 40 WPM for ECP Data Entry Operators, Parliament of India Junior Clerks and typical US clerk typist roles.
A practical way to read your level
This is our guideline, not an official scale:
- Under 25 WPM: still building basics. Focus on accuracy and touch typing.
- 25 to 34 WPM: close to many clerical requirements. Keep raising speed while accuracy stays high.
- 35 to 44 WPM: job-ready for most clerk and data-entry tests listed above.
- 45 WPM and above: a comfortable safety margin, which helps on nervous test days.
Speed is not enough
A test usually judges net speed or adds an accuracy rule, for example 3 percent mistakes, 8 percent mistakes or 96 percent accuracy in different notices. A 50 WPM typist who makes many errors can score lower than a 38 WPM typist who is accurate.
Set your own target
Look up your exact advert, take the required speed, and add 5 WPM as a margin. Then train until you reach that target in full timed tests on office-style passages, not only on easy text.
TypingNonStop has exam passages with the pass marks of real government and office jobs, net WPM, weak-word drills, lessons and games.

Frequently asked questions
Is 30 WPM good?
It meets some requirements, such as KP Junior Clerk adverts, but not others. Check your advert and keep a margin.
Is 40 WPM enough for every clerical job?
It covers most of the requirements we have seen, but a few posts or departments may ask for more.
Should I aim higher than the requirement?
Yes, by about 5 WPM, to protect yourself against nerves and unfamiliar text.
