Data entry operator typing test: key depressions, digits and accuracy

Data entry tests are different from ordinary typing tests. They care about exact characters, numbers and codes, and some are measured in key depressions instead of words per minute.

Two ways the speed is measured

Key depressions per hour counts every keystroke. The SSC Data Entry Operator test uses 8,000 key depressions per hour, tested as 2,000 in 15 minutes, which is about 27 WPM. Words per minute is used by other bodies: the Election Commission of Pakistan screens Data Entry Operator (BS-14) candidates at 40 WPM in English, with a separate Urdu typing test.

Why digits and codes are hard

Numbers such as 1,45,860.50, case codes such as APP/2026/009145, and file names such as BACKUP_FINAL_v3.xlsx mix digits, capitals and symbols. Typists lose accuracy here because the fingers travel to the number row and the shift key. Slow, deliberate practice on mixed strings is the cure.

How to train

Accuracy first

In data entry a single wrong digit can make a record useless, so examiners often weigh accuracy heavily. Treat accuracy as part of the speed: aim for exact copies, then raise the pace.
