SSC LDC and JSA typing test: 35 WPM in English, 30 in Hindi, and the DEO rule

The Staff Selection Commission runs typing tests for clerical posts, and the rules are different for Lower Division Clerks (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistants (JSA) and Data Entry Operators (DEO). Here is how the numbers work.

LDC and JSA: words per minute

For LDC and JSA posts the typing test asks for 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi, in a test of 10 minutes. Over 10 minutes, 35 WPM means about 350 correct words.

Data Entry Operator: key depressions

For DEO posts the test is measured in key depressions rather than words: 8,000 key depressions per hour, tested over 15 minutes, which is 2,000 key depressions.

To compare with words per minute, remember that five key depressions make one word. So 2,000 key depressions is 400 words in 15 minutes, or roughly 27 WPM. That is a lower speed than LDC, but data entry tests are usually checked more strictly for exact characters.

Practise the way the test is built

Practise in blocks of 10 minutes for LDC and JSA, and 15 minutes for DEO, so your hands and attention are trained for the full length, not just the first minute.

Use office-style English: notices, circulars, dates in the form 31.01.2027, rupee amounts, brackets and semicolons. These are where most mistakes hide.

A margin of safety

Aim 3 to 5 WPM above the requirement in practice. If you can type 40 WPM at high accuracy, 35 WPM on test day is comfortable even when you are nervous.
